Racing Background

* Nicky is currently one of Britain’s leading jumps trainers, having won many of the most important races. These include the Champion Hurdle (three times), the Queen Mother Champion Chase and the Stayers’ Hurdle (twice).
* Although Nicky’s family background is not strongly connected to horseracing, his late father was a member of the Jockey Club and the chairman of Racecourse Holdings Trust, which owns 13 racecourses throughout Britain.
* His decision to become a trainer was influenced by the time he spent with Fred Winter, for whom he was assistant trainer. In addition, Nicky was also a successful amateur jockey. He progressed into training racehorses, having accumulated 75 winners during his six years of race riding.
* Nicky’s fist winner as a trainer was at Kempton Park in 1972, with a horse called Happy Warrior.
* He has since trained many leading horses, including See You Then, Remittance Man and The Tsarevich.
* Remittance Man continues to be Nicky’s favourite horse. He won several major races including the 1991 Arkle Challenge Trophy and the 1992 Queen Mother Champion Chase, both of which are run at Cheltenham.
* He has trained several awkward horses during his time as a trainer. See You Then was one such horse, being particularly savage. Remittance Man was also difficult as he was a desperate ‘box walker’ (i.e. he wouldn’t relax in the stable). However, his problems were eventually overcome by providing him with a sheep as a stable companion!
* Nicky’s greatest training feat was winning a third Champion Hurdle in 1987, with See You Then.
* He is very consistent in producing winners of big races such as the Champion Hurdle, and in 2004 secured a fourth win in the Tote Gold Trophy at Newbury with Geos.

* Aside from horseracing, Nicky is a keen golfer and also enjoys shooting and fishing.
* Nicky’s star sign is Sagittarius.
* His favourite band is the Rolling Stones, whilst his favourite film is ‘10’.
* Nicky describes his bad habits as smoking, wine and worrying!
